Leh at an altitude of 3,500m is the main city in Ladakh and
is 1,077km from Delhi. Visitors flying into Leh should allow themselves enough
time to acclimatise and any strenuous activity should be avoided for at least
two days. Leh’s high altitude can often cause insomnia, headaches,
breathlessness and loss of appetite.
Key sites in Leh include the Johkang, Old Town, Namgyal
Tsemo (mid-16th century fort and monastery), and the Peace Pagoda and visits to
these places can be achieved whilst acclimatising to the high altitude.
Several famous monasteries are located along the Indus
Valley and easily reached by car from Leh and these include the monasteries at:
Thikse, Stakna, Alci and Spituk.
